Fall Style Mash Up!

Fall Style Mash Up

It’s FALL! I’ll tell you how I know. The smoke cleared from our beautiful little valley just in time for the first day of school (yesterday). Behold! What we saw was reinvigorating! The leaves on a few of the trees on the mountainsides are already blazing red. The air was crisp as we made the walk up the hill to Soldier Hollow Charter School. My youngest was whining to have a coat on his “hike” down to the car.

This is hands down my favorite season of the year for so many reasons, and Fall Style, Fashion, and Dressing are just a few more reasons to be joneses on Autumn!!!

As I am still prepping outfit photos for the season, I thought I’d sub in this fun Fall Style Mash Up for my wonderful readers. The color story here is clear. I am hankering after classic reds, deep greens, and that just-so gray to bring me full circle into the season.

Another awesome addition to your denim this fall is a pair of high-waisted skinnies. I love the ones above from Madewell. Plus, if you are looking for a tried and true professional’s take on high-waisted jeans, Emily Schuman of Cupcakes and Cashmere gives a great review of many, many high-waisted pairs available now!

Wild West Bakery

DSC_0028

How appropriate that we find ourselves in Wyoming today on our road trip. Forever West, as their welcome signs proclaims. Today we’re sharing a Kiwi Crate project we rolled out last week– a decorate-it-yourself baker’s hat and apron.

We’ve had this crate for a while because I try to stretch out the activities through the month. The kids really enjoyed the decorating process. Better yet, THEY suggested that we use our baker’s apparel to start a bakery complete with a cash register, Hostess Zingers, water, and an Open/Closed sign, of course!

I give you the Wild West Bakery!!!!! I hope you have an awesome Friday and a wonderful weekend.

Quick N Spicy Cucumbers

DSC_0085

I used these cucumbers to top the Thai Turkey Burgers I posted last week. The combination is absolutely DYNAMITE! The truth is, these quick cucs are so good you can simply eat them plain if you’d like!

Enjoy!

Spicy Cucumbers

1 english cucumber (sliced wafer thin)

3/4 C. rice wine vinegar (sometimes I do like, 3/4 rice wine vinegar and 1/4 water, or all vinegar is fine too, you decide)

1- 2 red thai chilis

Pinch of salt and

Pinch of sugar to taste (about 1/2 or 1 tsp. of each or so)

Place in the fridge for an hour, or longer if you want more  flavor.

I know I’ve said it before, and I’m sure I’ll say it again. I live in a pretty rad state. I am bowled over, blown away, awed, and left astounded time and again by the beauty that is Utah. Now listen, I also understand that States are arbitrary places. Lines drawn by humans and governments to create place and order and voting precincts.

But WOW. I cannot get over the sublimity, the grandeur, the sweep and flow of this landscape. Need I go on! LOL.

August has arrived. Summer is winding to its close. It was a quick one, I tell you, at least over here at R+R. I felt as though it was the 4th of July before I knew and BOMB! Here comes fall, and autumn, and school, and schedules. Sort of still in shock.

We mustn’t get ahead of ourselves, however. I’m going to savor the last bit of summer we have ahead of us. I’m going to stand on a cliff and let the wind blow my hair back. I’m going to stare at a lizard, and kick up some red dust. I hope you are having or embarking on a lovely Tuesday. Thanks for stoping by!

Seven Summer Reads (For Kids)

reading-quote

We love to read over here at Refined + Rugged. Though I don’t have the opportunity to read as often as I’d like to, I set the goal to read three books this summer and I’m nearly finished with the third. Along with reading for personal enjoyment it is a pleasure and priority to me to read with my children.

Together as a family we finished Winnie the Pooh last Spring, and before school begins again, I wanted to offer up a few books we have embarked upon this summer. What are some of your reading picks for children? Do you have any sensational books you’ve read together as a family?

I hope you have a magnificent Monday!!!
